more measurements on population

net migration is the difference between the # of people entering and leaving a country during 1 year

an excess of people entering the country is net immigration

written as a positive number
EX: canada has 5.65 migrants per 1000 population

an excess of people leaving the country is net emigration

written as a negative number
EX: Mexico has -1.68 migrants per 1000 population

why do people migrate?

push:
- war
- environmental degradation
- unemployment or underemployment
- religious or ethnic persecution

pull:
- better economic opportunity
- better health services
- religious freedom
- political freedom
