Today in class, we went over each others essay. I checked my buddy tj's essay and it was really good. I was actually interested in what he wrote. It was all fluent and easily readable. I could understand everything he wrote and his facts and his sentences actually made me interested in his topic. When he checked mine, he said that i had good facts and that i didnt have many grammar mistakes and that i also made him interested. we wrote about different topics. I chose option A whereas he chose option B. We also went over the test and recieved them and im not really suprised that i did bad on it. i didnt really understand that much but atleast now i can go home and study for the exam and hopefully get a good grade on it.

Today in human-geo, we took a test. I think i did well on the matching part but im not to sure about the multiple choice. i think i did okay on the multiple choice but i dont think i did amazing. It was about migration and i felt that i new everything pretty well. i studied at home and during school hours but i feel i just went completely blank when the paper was handed to me. When i finished, i look at some of my answers and now i dont even think i got an A. I think i got either a low b or high c on the test. I hope this doesnt bring my grade completely down because i have a 94 which is a pretty comfortable A to me so hopefully it doesn't go down to like a b or a low A.

Controlling Migration
* countries have adopted selective immigration services
- preference shown for specific employment placement and family reunification

* passing of the quota act in 1921 and the national origins act in 1924 by the U.S. congress marked the end of unrestricted immigration to the U.S.

* more seek admission to the U.S. than is permitted by the quotas, thus preferences are shown toward
- family reunification
1. about 3/4 of the immigrants

900 Jews took a boat to various countries in 1930s seeking for help but got turned down by all of them. They all have to return to europe and get scattered among different countries but the nazis end up taking over most of europe meaning that most of the jews that were rejected all died or were put in nazi death camps.

Today we debated and had a poll about whether we thought the world's international migrants level was either 3 percent or 7 percent. most of the class was voting for the 3 percent side and then we had another poll about whether we think donald trump is doing the right thing or not. most people said they didn't know and at first, i was saying that he is but then i thought to myself and i have no idea what donald trump is doing so i think i shouldve gone to the "I dont know" side. Then we talked about asylum. We got into examples of how the holocaust was starting and how america didnt accept the jews that came over by boat and then later realizing how many lives we costed and how many we couldve saved.

we took a test on the worksheet we worked on yesterday about hans rosling. I don't think i did good because i was confused on the part about the different stages like stage 1 stage 2 and so on. other than those two questions it was pretty easy. I am happy its thanksgiving break because i get to take a break from school to hang with friends and be stress free for a little. i also get to wake up and fall asleep whenever and not have to worry about a thing. I cant wait to spend time with the family over the break. I had out of uniform today and im happy i dont have to dress in regular uniform too.

11/7/18

today, we took a test. I thought it was a fairly easy test but some of the questions were tricky. In the beginning, i thought i was going to stress out because of the cia.gov questions but thank you for limiting the questions just down to 12. I felt that i did decent although i didnt know a few of the questions. I also thought it was funny talking to other people and looking at their drawings. I had no idea what to draw at first and then i looked at someone elses drawings and i thought it was a good idea. I did something like his but i changed it up a little. It was based on the same thing because the cartoon was supposed to be on what we learned. The person behind me was making me laugh because she was stressed out far worse than i thought i was going to and she was funny about it.

11/6/18

Today, we went over what was going to be on the test. I made sure that I had all my notes so I could prepare and I made sure I was ready. Mr. Schick gave us questions that were similar to the ones on the test. We were told how to use CIA.GOV and made sure we were all fluent in it so we didn't have any difficulties doing so. He told us that the first 15 questions were going to based on the CIA.GOV website and we would have to finish the 15 questions in 15 minutes which doesn't seem like too much of a problem since the ones he gave us only took at most 30 seconds each for the whole class.

Mr. schick gave us some good tasty muffins, they really were good. :)

Today, we just pretty much ellaborated on the population pyramids but also, we learned about TEDed talks. We watched a TEDEd talk where a woman who was a model went into a deep thought. She entered the stage as if she was walking and doing a photo shoot but she changed into different casual clothes which changed the perspective of herself to other people. She talked about how privileged she is and went into a conversation involving her speeding. She got away with it because she was a white young women who the cop considered attractive and that made her think what would happen if she was a black man wearing saggy and baggy clothes. She told us to think about how we see people and that it's what matters on the inside and not what people see on the outside.

11/1/18

Today, we talked about different states in America and looked at their population pyramids and examined them. for example, ft Bragg had mostly men because it was a military base and mostly men serve in the army. Some place in Massachusetts had mostly girls because it was an all girls college. We looked at other countries such as Japan and saw that the population was a lot lower than now. we saw that some African countries had very high birth rates. We saw that Punta Gorda in Florida was mostly older people because it was for retired people and it was a nicer place. we talked about how the younger people were mostly people that worked for them or were taking care of their families.

Population pyramids

we use population pyramids to analyze the growth or fertile, mortality, and migration in cities or countries. Males are always on the left side of the pyramids and females are always on the right. the populations are in 5 year bands so from 0-4, 5-9, 10-14 ETC. There are 3 basic shapes to these graphs

The X-Mas Tree, developing nation
- growth rates are slow
- birth rates are high
- short life expectancy

The Box, developed nation (slow growth)
- low infant mortality rate
- slow population growth
- long life expectancy

The Cup, developed nation (negative growth)
- Slow birth rate
- shrinking population
- long life expectancy

10/29/18

Today in class, we didn't really do anything. We talked about our grades and looked over what was wrong and also went over all of the confusion amongst our class' grades. I was looking through my grades and making sure I was all caught up on everything and I would say that im pretty glad and pleased with my grades. Human Geo today was pretty interesting though, many people had some confusions and some people were even stressed that they were going to do bad. We talked about how most of our quiz and test questions would be on the semester exam and he was talking about how we should keep our quizzes and tests so we could study good and do well.

Emigration and immigration can affect a countries population.

Migration of Senegal 5.)
The country of Senegal has a net migration rate of -1.5 which leads to a decrease in population

more measurements on population

net migration is the difference between the # of people entering and leaving a country during 1 year

an excess of people entering the country is net immigration

written as a positive number
EX: canada has 5.65 migrants per 1000 population

an excess of people leaving the country is net emigration

written as a negative number
EX: Mexico has -1.68 migrants per 1000 population

why do people migrate?

push:
- war
- environmental degradation
- unemployment or underemployment
- religious or ethnic persecution

pull:
- better economic opportunity
- better health services
- religious freedom
- political freedom

Life Expectancy

Life Expectancy - The average # of years lived by a group of people born in the same year.

Monaco (Highest)
89.52 total
85.63 men
93.58 women

U.S. #42
79.68 total
77.32 men
81.97 women

Chad (Lowest)
49.81 total
48.64 men
51.03 women

Potable Water = Drinkable pure water

Women live longer than men

- women are outnumbered by men in terms of which gender serves in the army
- women are being checked by the doctor more(whether its during pregnancy or when its during the adolescence age)
- women are more cautious than males
- men have more dangerous jobs than women primarily

Crude birth rate: # of births per 1000 people of a population
Crude death rate: # of births per 1000 people of a population

Rate of natural increase(RNI)
- Produced by subtracting death rated from birth rate
- This gives us the annual natural growth rate - in percentage form - for a country or region

But don't forget about migration...

test

Today, we took a test in class. I found it to be pretty easy but some questions stumped me. I feel as if I knew pretty much everything on the quiz. The day for me has been pretty good. In Spanish, we worked on a worksheet with a sub. In Biology, we took a quiz on Macromolecules. In advisory, we had donuts. In LA we read the rest of our short story, "The masque of the red death." We watched a video of it too. At lunch, I had the same as I normally get, chicken and fries, and that leads us to know, Human geography.

Culture

Today in class, we discussed the differences in culture and what culture really means. We gave examples like, americans celebrate their traditions certain ways such as July 4th. This is part of the American culture. Im not sure where this takes place but Rashashana(spelled wrong)is a tradition in another country which would also happen to be part of their culture. We learned about the differences in languages and how you can tell where a person is from based on their accent and how they speak a certain way. Jason said that he can tell the differences in the language in china and he can tell what part of china a person is from based on the way he speaks. Also, religion can do with culture. Americans aren't considered a certain religion because there are many different religions within the U.S.A. In the Middle East, however, they are mostly all muslim or islamic.

Regions of culture
- culture is the body of customary beliefs, material traits, and social forms that together constitute the distinct tradition of a group of people
- origin of words, culture, is the latin cultus, which means "to care for"
2. meanings
  1. to care about
  2. to care for
Geographers study both definitions of culture
- Culture: what people care about
- geographers study why the customary ideas, beliefs, and values people produce a distinctive culture in a particular place
- especially important cultural values derive from a group's language, religion, and ethnicity.
-culture: what people take care of
- second element of culture of interest is production of material wealth, such as food, clothing, and shelter they humans need in order to survive and thrive.
- scale is a relationship between the portion of the earth being studied and earth as a whole
- globalization is a force or process that involves the entire world and results in making something worldwide in scope.

- name derived from people of prominence, religious affiliation, physical features, or origins of its settlers
2. site
- site is the physical characteristics of a place
- characteristics include climate, water sources, topography, soil, vegetation, latitude, and elevation
3. situation
- a situation is the location of a point relative to other places
-region
- an area on earth defined by 1 or more distinctive characteristics is a region
- mostly applied at 2 scales

Test Received

Today, we received our tests back. we went over our tests to tell us what we got wrong and why we got it wrong. We went over the essays and he told us what we need to know for each written part. I know that I need to work on the essay since I got a 30 out of 40. I know that I need to hold on to this test for future references and as a study guide for the semester test. I got an 84% and the class average was 85% so I am pleased with how I performed on this.

Today's class

Today in class, we didn't learn anything, instead, we did homework we needed to do or finish up and classwork. Some people needed to finish there maps whether they needed touch up or sketch all of the rest of them. Also, some people brought in shadows. There were three of them today. their names were thinking about coming to John Carroll. Mr. Schick checked our blogs as well andAll of them were invested in sports, whether it was contact or non-contant. School today was different. We had shorter classes and we had a 20 minute advisor time. We also had a club fair where we looked around at the different clubs and signed up for any were interested in.

Maps 3.0

Jack McKenzie
9/26/18

Today, we learned about different parts off the maps. We labeled the: Robinson projection map, The Gall Peters projection map, and the mercator projection map.We labeled stuff like the tropic of cancer, tropic of Capricorn, JC, country of origin, all seven continents, all 5 oceans, equator, prime meridian, and the international date line.

We learned that the prime meridian is located on 0 degrees longitude and the international date line is located on the complete other side of the world at 180 degrees longitude. The prime meridian runs straight through Greenwich which is a city located in England. I now know a bit more of the world and where my birth place was located which is pretty cool to me. I know more about the different other countries and where they are located because I was discussing about it with my friends and where they are from and where they have been.

Maps 2.0

Jack McKenzie
9/25/18
Putting a map on a flat piece of paper = projection

4 types of distortion
- shape of area
- distance between points
- relative size of areas alter
- direction between points

Imaginary grids are drawn on the map of earths surface

meridians = longitude
parallels = latitude

Further accuracy = dividing each grid into minutes and minutes into seconds

Time - divide 360 degrees by 24 (each hour of the day) which equals 15 times zones

Different type of maps

Jack McKenzie
9/20/18

Today, we learned about two different types of maps. The maps we use and all other schools use are all false. We learned that Greenland is actually 14 times less than Africa yet it seems almost as big as Africa on our maps. Russia is easily the biggest country on our map and Europe is bigger than normal. Basically every country is either bigger or smaller. On the real map, we can see that Greenland decreased in size, Canada is smaller, there is a significant size decrease on Russia, and Europe is smaller. This map gives us more accurate details and the map seems a bit stretched. In the little skit we watched today, the characters were debating which map to use, the correct map shows us  real sizes but the old map shows that the bigger, the more important.

Maps

Jack McKenzie
9/19/18

Today in class, we learned about maps. We learned about how maps today are used for referencing and how they are more complex than maps back then. The first map created was just drawn of Europe because the rest of the world wasn't discovered yet. Today, we have a map including all the countries.  Some flat maps go into detail like sea-level and latitude/longitude. we also have 3d maps like globes.
Back then, there was even a map that had shells on it and sticks. Each shell indicated an island and the sticks represented the path you were supposed to take to get to each island.

Blog 9/12/18

Today, we learned about excellence and how the Ancient Greek used it. How this lesson on "excellence" effects me is how I will do during school. It motivates me to take school seriously, to get good grades, and to make new friends. Excellence could be interpreted in many ways but I think that that excellence means how well you do inside and outside school.

I feel like you are helping me have a strong will to work hard because you are teaching us so much about excellence or "arete."

I learned that the Ancient Greek people always did their best no matter what the situation was and that it was part of their daily lives.

A Message To Garcia Interpretation

This little story takes place during the Spanish-American War. President McKinley needed help from the leader of Insurgents, Garcia. There was a young man named Rowan who was willing to help find Garcia. He was given a letter that he was supposed to give to Garcia when he found him. He spent four days traveling to Cuba and in three weeks, he made it from one side of the jungle to the other alone. He was going around villages and talking to clerks to try finding where he was located. After many long days, he found Garcia's station in the mountains and personally delivered the message.
Rowan showed his determination during this story and I can be determined in school as well. I can be determined get good grades or to do well during sports. No matter what is in my way, I have to persevere and not back down. That's how this story connects to my life during high school.

School Impressions

These few days of school have treated me very well. I enjoy all the classes I am taking this year. The hardest class right now is probably Honors Spanish 2. Everyone is super helpful and the teachers are extremely nice. I knew I would like this school very much the moment I walked in and shadowed. I had high expectations here and JC met all of them and more. (79 words) I had troubles open my locker at first but some seniors helped me and taught me so now I am efficient at opening it.

At the end of the day, I go to soccer practice and change in the locker rooms and on game days, I even get to leave early. We ride the bus on the way to our away games and we can get a ride home. So far, JC has been a very good time and I cannot wait for the rest of the year.
